Description & Requirements



On behalf of The Department for Transport, we are looking for a Vehicle System Safety Specialist (Inside IR35) for a 2 year hybrid contract based in Bristol or Nuneaton.

As a Vehicle System Safety Specialist, your main responsibilities will be to:


  • Lead the technical review and approval of Safety Management Systems (SMS) for vehicle certification.
  • Assess and approve ADAS and ADS documentation for vehicle type approval.
  • Manage and support vehicle safety incident investigations and technical responses.
  • Provide expert technical guidance to internal teams and stakeholders on vehicle system safety and compliance.
  • Contribute to the development and interpretation of automotive safety regulations and standards.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support the development of internal capability and technical knowledge.


Essential:


  • Experience conducting audits against automotive safety standards (e.g. ISO 26262, ISO 21448)
  • Background in product development of safety-critical vehicle systems (e.g. braking, steering, ADAS, ADS).
  • Strong understanding of system safety engineering principles within automotive or transport environments.
  • Proven capability to provide technical leadership, oversight, and assurance on engineering activities.
  • Ability to analyse technical data and make evidence-based decisions in a regulatory setting.
  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field. Relevant professional certifications (e.g. ISO 26262, INCOSE, CEng) or significant hands-on experience in system safety engineering will also be considered.
