Description & Requirements

On behalf of Digital Health and Care Wales we are looking for a Lead Interaction Designer (Inside IR35) for a 6 month contract. Remote working with occasional travel to Cardiff.

Digital Health and Care Wales is an ambitious organisation created by Welsh Government to lead on the digital transformation of health and care. It builds on the digital architecture and national services put in place by the NHS Wales Informatics Service over the past decade.

The organisation will lead on large-scale developments that make a significant difference to the people of Wales as well as to health and care professionals, such as expansion of the digital patient record and the creation of a National Data Resource. It will improve the way data is collected, shared and used. We will achieve this by working in partnership with all NHS Wales organisations and through our expert and dedicated workforce.

As a Lead Interaction Designer you will be an experienced designer who works with minimal support and exercises their own judgment across larger teams and on more complex services, while influencing and mentoring others.

As a Lead Interaction Designer your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Utilise research to lead the design of user-centred services, ensuring they meet user needs and NHS Wales digital standards.
  • Work closely with researchers, developers, product managers, and policy teams to develop concepts and design accessible, usable interactions.
  • Plan and facilitate design workshops, critiques, and collaborative sessions to develop and improve service journeys.
  • Mentor other designers, support design quality across teams, and contribute to the wider design community - setting direction and embedding good practice within teams.
  • Work with service owners and programme directors to develop design concepts.
  • Lead and be responsible for interaction design related strategies and policies, providing guidance to others on working in the strategic context.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders, balancing technical and user needs to support evidence-based design decisions.
  • Design components using appropriate modelling techniques following agreed architectures, design standards, patterns and methodology.

Essential:

  • Experience in a designer role at a similar level, working collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team to develop design concepts and accessible solution across a range of channels.
  • Proficiency in using design principles to ensure systems are usable, accessible, and effective for people with diverse abilities and contexts.
  • Experience of using and promoting a design system, service manual and design principles including recommending new patterns or updating existing patterns into a design system.
  • Figma experience.
  • Interpersonal skills to build respectful and trusting relationships with a wide range of people, using inclusive communication.
  • Teamwork to work openly and supportively with others and help create a team where everyone feels able to contribute.

Desirable:

  • Public Sector / Healthcare experience.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked within the UK and not Overseas.
