Description & Requirements

On behalf of NHS England, we are looking for an Assistant Accountant (Taxation) (Inside IR35) for an 8 month contract based in Darlington or Leeds, 1-2 days per week (Can offer remote with attendance as and when required for the right candidate)

As an Assistant Accountant (Taxation) your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Support the preparation and submission of monthly VAT returns and associated reconciliations.
  • Manage and respond to VAT and taxation queries from internal stakeholders.
  • Coordinate supporting documentation for VAT and HMRC enquiries.
  • Assist with financial accounting activities, including statutory reporting and year-end processes.
  • Produce financial reports, analysis and reconciliations to support decision making.
  • Maintain taxation records, logs and financial documentation to ensure compliance.
  • Update and maintain finance guidance and SharePoint resources.
  • Liaise with finance colleagues and external stakeholders to resolve accounting and taxation issues.
  • Assist with audit requests by gathering supporting financial information and documentation.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of financial processes and controls.
  • Support ad hoc financial accounting and taxation projects as required.


Essential:

  • Previous experience working in an Assistant Accountant, Financial Accountant or Finance Officer role.
  • Good understanding of VAT processes and indirect taxation.
  • Experience preparing financial reports, reconciliations and analysing financial data.
  • Strong knowledge of financial accounting principles and financial controls.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables and Lookups.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a finance team.
  • Experience working within a large, complex organisation.


Desirable:

  • Experience within the NHS or wider public sector.
  • Knowledge of NHS VAT guidance and public sector taxation.
  • Experience supporting statutory accounts or year-end financial reporting.
  • Part-qualified or studying towards AAT, ACCA, CIMA, ACA or CIPFA.
  • Experience using ERP finance systems such as Oracle or SAP.
  • Experience supporting internal or external audits.
  • Knowledge of SharePoint or document management systems.
