On behalf of DWP we are looking for a Senior Java Developer for a 12 month (Inside IR35) contract. Hybrid working with 3 days per week required in either Manchester, Leeds or Newcastle.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for welfare, pensions, and child maintenance policy. As the UK’s biggest public service department, it administers the State Pension and a range of working age, disability and ill health benefits to around 20 million claimants and customers. As such, we operate on a scale that is almost unmatched anywhere in Europe and most people in Britain come into contact with us at some point in their lives.
Working with DWP, you will be helping us to drive our priorities to:
- Help people to move into work and support those already in work to progress, with the aim of increasing overall workforce participation
- Help people to plan and save for later life, while providing a safety net for those who need it now
- Provide effective, efficient, and innovative services to the millions of claimants who rely on us every day, including the most vulnerable in society
- Improve experience of our services while maximising value for money for the taxpayer.
In Bereavement and Care we deal with delivering systems to manage and pay support payments to citizens in a time of need. So the user interactions for these services must be supportive of people dealing with these problems by being as simple, clear and straightforward to use as possible.
You have the opportunity to work with Java, Spring, Nodejs Databases and Cloud Platforms to deliver robust microservice based systems. Working with a community of Software Engineers committed to building reusable components, services and patterns for use throughout the department; you will be able to contribute to shared features and components.
We use industry standard development frameworks and languages to build enterprise level systems but are always looking to bring in new and original ways into practice to help speed of delivery or robustness of software implementation.
Essential:
- Working knowledge and experience of modern Java technologies, frameworks, design principles and methodologies such as Test Driven Development (TDD) and Behaviour Driven Development (BDD). Capable of developing software solutions of the highest quality.
- Demonstrable ability to analyse technical problems, break them down into manageable components, and develop, effective, scalable solutions.
- Knowledge and experience of APIs, RESTful services and Microservice Architectures.
- Working knowledge and experience of developing on cloud-based environments like AWS and Azure.
- Knowledge and experience of SQL and noSQL database applications such as Postgres, MySQL and MongoDB.
- Experience and the skills required to build up a useful, robust automated test suite to support a continuous deployment environment.
- Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams, communicating with stakeholders, aiding delivery, ensuring standards, ways of working and being part of a supportive and collaborative culture.
- Public Sector experience.
