Description & Requirements

On behalf of Homes England, we are looking for a Reconciliation Accountant (Loan Operations) (Inside IR35) for a 6 month contract based remotely.

Homes England, the government’s housing, and regeneration agency, plays a central role in tackling the housing challenges the country now faces. We have the appetite, influence, expertise, and resource to drive positive market change, and our mission is to ensure more homes are built in areas of greatest need, improve affordability, and create a sustainable housing market.

Following the publication of the government’s Levelling Up White Paper, Homes England has also been tasked with a core role in spearheading regeneration, partnering with places to reduce economic disparity, empower local leaders and create equal opportunities across the country to ensure communities reach their full potential.

As a Reconciliation Accountant (Loan Operations) your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Own and deliver post-contract loan accounting activities from ongoing servicing through to recovery and closure.
  • Act as a key point of contact for delivery and operations teams on post-contract activities, identifying and escalating non-compliance, control weaknesses, or data issues.
  • Manage monthly loan payment processes to borrowers, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Maintain and reconcile a loan system tracking principal, interest, and fees for each loan.
  • Perform manual monthly interest calculations and postings as part of month-end processes.
  • Lead monthly reconciliations of loan balances, interest accruals, fees, and payments.
  • Investigate and resolve reconciling items and discrepancies, providing clear audit trails and documentation.
  • Address technical queries related to post-contract loan activities from within the team and wider business.
  • Identify process gaps and contribute to the design and implementation of improved end-to-end post-contract and loan processes.
  • Develop and communicate clear process guidance and documentation for internal teams and relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide leadership, support, and guidance to colleagues involved in post-contract activities, intervening in complex or contentious matters where required.

Essential Criteria

  • Experience in an operational or management accounting role.
  • Strong reconciliation and investigation skills, with experience resolving complex discrepancies.
  • Hands-on experience with loan accounting, lending products, or similar financial instruments.
  • Experience owning monthly accounting processes, including manual interest calculations and postings.
  • Strong Excel skills and confidence working with detailed transactional data.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership in a remote contract role.
  • Strong attention to detail and a process-driven mindset.

Desirable Criteria

  • Background as a Management Accountant rather than a Financial Accountant.
  • Experience in financial services, lending, fintech, private credit, or public-sector loan environments.
  • Experience working with or improving loan management systems.
  • Exposure to designing or enhancing post-contract or operational finance processes.
  • Experience providing functional guidance or informal leadership within finance or operations teams.
