On behalf of AWE, we are looking for a Commercial Programme Director Inside IR35 for a 12 month contract based in Hybrid Working (2 days per week on site in Aldermaston, Reading and remaining WFH)

AWE plays a crucial role in national nuclear security. Their role in nuclear deterrence and their specialist technical assistance to nuclear threat reduction is vital in the defence against the most serious threats faced by the UK. SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be eligible and willing to undergo these checks.
Role purpose:
This is a new role that has been created to provide enhanced commercial leadership and accountability. As senior lead you will work with the Group Commercial Director to create the team business plan and deliver transformation in people, systems, and process to embed leading edge commercial practice.
AWE is seeking an experienced Commercial Director to lead is infrastructure commercial solution. The role will report to the Group Commercial Director and be accountable for leading a team of 50-60 FTE to deliver an annual investment programme of circa £400m per annum in five key programme areas:
- Building Works – delivering series of upgrades to existing building fabric and systems
- Civil Works – delivering new car parks and building extensions.
- Equipment Re-kits – replacing obsolete complex equipment and technology.
- Utilities Works – delivering improvement works to our electrical, gas and steam networks.
- Demolition & Decommissioning – ensuring hazardous waste is removed from surplus assets and completing safe demolition activity.
The main duties and responsibilities of the Commercial Programme Director will be:
- Business Partnering – Embedded with programme managers to understand business needs and translate into effective procurement strategies.
- Commercial Governance – managing commercial risk register, reporting rhythm and chairing Infrastructure Commercial Boards to ensure senior stakeholders are aware of key commercial risks and progress.
- Supplier Relationship Management – managing strategic supplier relationships and ensuring supplier deliver performance outcomes and quality framework.
- Contract Operations - ensuring monthly payment application, Fee review and that all contractual terms related to NEC3 and NEC4 contract are applied.
- Contract Change – working with project managers and suppliers to address contract change events and risk mitigation.
- Contract Disputes – address strategic disputes to protect AWE commercial interests.

- Previous Head of Commercial/Commercial Director experience
- Strong experience in creating, leading and developing high performing teams
- Excellent people and communication skills
- Strong people leader
- Experience presenting to C-Suite stakeholders
- Commercial governance experience
- Strong procurement experience
- Strong stakeholder management skills
- Previous Infrastructure experience
- Contract management experience
- NEC3 and NEC4 contract knowledge and experience
- Experience supporting procurement activity on a large scale project/programme
- Ability to interact with all levels, often responding with little notice, or changing priorities
