Description & Requirements

On behalf of AWE we are looking for a Principal Commercial Manager (Inside IR35) for a 18 months contract based in Aldermaston/Reading 2 days per week.

AWE plays a crucial role in national nuclear security. Their role in nuclear deterrence and their specialist technical assistance to nuclear threat reduction is vital in the defence against the most serious threats faced by the UK. The commercial team for Estate Liabilities will have three key objectives:

  • Liabilities Partnership – tender and mobilise new 15 year strategic partnership for liabilities delivery with adoption of new Client operating model
  • Liabilities Framework – contract manage existing liabilities frameworks (4-6) and transition to new partnership model over 18 month period
  • Commercial Strategy – work with Head of Estate Liabilities to develop long term commercial vision, priorities and goals for the estate liabilities team


The Principal Commercial Manager is responsible for leading the development and execution of sourcing strategies across three key programmes. This individual will collaborate with cross-functional teams to determine the best sourcing models, contract structures, and performance regimes to deliver high-quality products and services. While this role does not include direct line management, the Principal Commercial Manager will be responsible for guiding and mentoring a team of professionals and ensuring effective execution of sourcing strategies


As a Principal Commercial Manager, your main responsibilities will be to:


  • Lead the development of sourcing strategies for three key programmes, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Design and execute comprehensive sourcing plans that encompass strategy, contracting models, and performance regimes for optimal outcomes.
  • Accountable for identifying the best commercial products to be sourced and determining the optimal method for market engagement.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to define requirements and create robust market engagement strategies.
  • Oversee the process of going to market, ensuring that sourcing methods are efficient, cost-effective, and aligned with organisational goals.
  • Identify appropriate suppliers and assess their ability to meet the needs of the programme.
  • Develop and implement infrastructure requirements and sourcing models to support the successful execution of the programmes.
  • Provide insights into commercial models that drive business growth and enhance the value delivered to the organisation.
  • Lead and support a team of professionals, ensuring their tasks align with programme goals and timelines.
  • Work closely with the procurement team to facilitate smooth execution of the sourcing strategies.
  • Mentor and guide team members, sharing expertise and fostering a collaborative environment to meet performance objectives.
  • Develop and implement performance regimes to ensure the sourcing strategies deliver against agreed KPIs and outcomes.
  • Establish and monitor key metrics to track success and implement improvements where necessary.
  • Engage with senior leaders and key stakeholders to keep them informed on progress and strategic direction.
  • Present sourcing strategy updates and outcomes to stakeholders, offering insights and recommendations


Essential:


  • Strong experience in category management, procurement, and sourcing strategy development.
  • Proven ability to create and execute comprehensive sourcing strategies for large-scale programmes.
  • Experience working across multiple functional teams and managing cross-functional collaborations.
  • Knowledge of commercial models, contracting, and performance management.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong leadership capabilities with the ability to motivate and guide teams, even without direct line management responsibility.
  • Familiarity with procurement software/tools and data-driven decision-making processes.


Desirable:


  • Relevant certifications in procurement or supply chain management (e.g., CIPS, MCIPS).
  • Managing either the demolition or recap programs, focusing on high-hazard facilities management
  • Experience working in [industry-specific experience].
