Description & Requirements


On behalf of Network Rail, we are looking for a Senior Investigator (Inside IR35) for a 6month contract which is a hybrid role so does require up to 3 days a week in the Milton Keynes office, additional site visits may be required which will be expensed

To undertake comprehensive investigations into serious accidents, incidents, environmental events, and major performance‑loss occurrences through detailed examination of all available evidence. The role will identify immediate, underlying, and systemic causes, and will be directly responsible for developing and implementing robust control measures, leading recommendations, and improvement workstreams. This includes analysing and reporting key accident and incident trends, making sure that the organisational risk register is kept current and accurately reflects emerging risks. The role is also accountable for driving and closing actions that prevent recurrence, strengthening operational and organisational safety, and embedding learning both internally and across the wider industry to enhance overall system safety and resilience.


As a Senior Investigator, your main responsibilities will be:


  • Act as Lead Investigator in selected serious investigations to deliver investigations to professional standards, identifying immediate and underlying causes, and delivering reports of a high standard which fulfil the requirements of the remit.Prepare and justify recommendations to correct the immediate and underlying causes identified.
  • Lead and deliver high‑quality investigations into serious events, implementing corrective actions, identifying trends, and updating the risk register to strengthen organisational and industry safety.Lead the implementation of investigation recommendations, ensuring corrective and preventative actions are embedded, monitored, and verified for effectiveness.
  • Drive organisational learning by translating investigation findings into practical insights, contributing to safety alerts, briefings, and wider industry learning channels.
  • Establish and oversee improvement workstreams arising from investigations, ensuring they are prioritised, resourced, and delivered to improve system safety and prevent recurrence.
  • Develop close working relationships with functional, industry and supply chain teams and provide specialist advice and support as necessary.
  • Manage responses to comments and queries concerning investigation reports, taking steps to have information appropriately evaluated.
  • Provide specialist advice and support to functional, industry and supply chain teams to improve the standard of investigation processes and reports and share best practice.


Essential Skills


  •  Must be a member of the Institute of Occupational Health and safety (IOSH) at Certified (CertIOSH) level or above
  • Detailed knowledge of investigation techniques and able to demonstrate their proper application.
  • Good knowledge of railway operations, engineering, safety and environmental management.
  • Good knowledge of health and safety legislation.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Logical thinker, with good analytical skills and computer operating skills.
  • Stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, to make sure that recommendations are understood, accepted, and acted upon across operational teams.


Desirable Skills


  • NEBOSH Diploma (Stage 1).
  • Good influencing skills.
