Description & Requirements

On behalf of DWP, we are looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer for a 12 month contract (Inside IR35) based hybrid in Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle or Sheffield 3 days per week.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for welfare, pensions, and child maintenance policy. As the UK’s biggest public service department, it administers the State Pension and a range of working age, disability and ill health benefits to around 20 million claimants and customers. As such, we operate on a scale that is almost unmatched anywhere in Europe and most people in Britain come into contact with us at some point in their lives.

Working with DWP, you will be helping us to drive our priorities to:

  • Help people to move into work and support those already in work to progress, with the aim of increasing overall workforce participation
  • Help people to plan and save for later life, while providing a safety net for those who need it now
  • Provide effective, efficient, and innovative services to the millions of claimants who rely on us every day, including the most vulnerable in society
  • Improve experience of our services while maximising value for money for the taxpayer.


As a Senior DevOps Engineer, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Design, build, and maintain secure, scalable Linux-based infrastructure across cloud platforms (primarily AWS), leveraging Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform.
  • Automate system configuration and application deployment using Configuration as Code (CaC) tools such as Ansible and scripting languages like Shell and Python.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitLab, GitHub, or Jenkins to enable efficient and reliable software delivery.
  • Build, secure, and manage containerized applications using Docker and related technologies across multiple environments.
  • Administer and optimise databases, particularly MongoDB Atlas, ensuring performance, security, and backup strategies are in place.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve infrastructure and application issues, including leading responses to severity incidents and using tools like Splunk for log aggregation and analysis.


Essential:

  • Extensive and demonstrable experience in designing, building, maintaining Linux workloads running across multiple environments on a cloud platform such as AWS.
  • Extensive experience in designing and implementing best practices using IaC tools such as Terraform and automating legacy applications with scripting languages such as shell scripts, python.
  • Extensive experience in designing and implementing best practices using CaC tools such as Ansible.
  • Extensive experience in designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Gitlab, Github, Jenkins. 
  • Extensive experience in building, deploying and securing containers using various strategies across multiple environments
  • Extensive experience in designing, implementing, testing with databases such as Mongo Atlas
  • Extensive experience in problem solving and troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Experience in using log management and aggregation tools such as Splunk.
  • Experience in handling severity incidents.
