Description & Requirements

On behalf of Network Rail, we are looking for a Principal Project Planner - Inside IR35 for a 12 Month contract (with possible extension) based Hybrid - Remote & 3 days p/week in York or Manchester.


Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a programme of activities that is improving the railway between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield. Stretching across the North of England between York and Manchester, this key 76-mile Transpennine railway serves 23 stations, crosses over and dips under 285 bridges and viaducts, passes through six miles of tunnels and crosses over 29 level crossings. It is the largest railway upgrade in the country.  The programme runs across multiple control periods and will deliver transformational changes to the current railway.


As a Principal Project Planner, your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Guide non-planning personnel through schedules and explain planning outputs clearly.
  • Develop and manage Level 3 schedules with a deep understanding of task execution and dependencies.
  • Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including Construction and Delivery Partners.
  • Track progress and simplify complex programme data for clear, effective reporting.
  • Lead planning teams and mentor others to build capability and understanding.
  • Apply knowledge of railway design, delivery, and access principles, including interpreting Railway Access box plans.


You'll have:

  • Demonstrable end-to-end Planning & Scheduling experience - using Primavera P6.
  • Rail & Railway Access experience including an understanding of Construction within Rail.
  • Expert communication skills & stakeholder management
  • MS Office proficiency - inc. a good understanding of Excel.
  • A relevant Project Management qualification - desirable.
