Description & Requirements

On behalf of DWP, we are looking for a Senior Front End Developer for a 12 month contract (Inside IR35) based in Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds and Sheffield.


The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for welfare, pensions, and child maintenance policy. As the UK’s biggest public service department, it administers the State Pension and a range of working age, disability and ill health benefits to around 20 million claimants and customers. As such, we operate on a scale that is almost unmatched anywhere in Europe and most people in Britain come into contact with us at some point in their lives.


Working with DWP, you will be helping us to drive our priorities to:

  • Help people to move into work and support those already in work to progress, with the aim of increasing overall workforce participation
  • Help people to plan and save for later life, while providing a safety net for those who need it now
  • Provide effective, efficient, and innovative services to the millions of claimants who rely on us every day, including the most vulnerable in society
  • Improve experience of our services while maximising value for money for the taxpayer.


You will be responsible for ensuring best practices are adhered to across the department and guiding teams on how to deliver quality software products.

You will assist in the design of software products that make up citizen services in collaboration with Architecture and Engineering principles. With a focus on operational stability, robustness, resilience, availability, accessibility and quality you will be accountable for the code your teams produce.

You will have knowledge and experience of modern web development stacks, web standards, user experience, progressive enhancement, performance, accessibility, browser compatibility, tooling and pipelines.


Key Experience includes:

  • Experience of writing production applications in NodeJs
  • Experience in building API’s
  • Experience of building secure web applications
  • Experience with TDD and BDD
  • Experience creating containerised web applications using technologies such as docker
  • Good understand of cloud hosting (specifically AWS) and containerisation


Knowledge and Experience required:

  • Experience creating accessibility compliant performant services for a wide range of users
  • Developing on cloud-based environments like AWS and Azure.
  • A good understanding of Test-Driven Development (TDD) and Behavioural Driven Development (BDD).
  • Experience with no SQL database applications such as and MongoDB.
  • Experience working collaboratively with UCD colleagues to create a well-rounded service for our users
  • Knowledge and experience of APIs, RESTful services and Microservice Architectures.
