Description & Requirements

On behalf of DWP, we are looking for a Test Engineer for a 12 Month (Inside IR35) contract based in Manchester, Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Newcastle or Sheffield 2 days per week.


The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for welfare, pensions, and child maintenance policy. As the UK’s biggest public service department, it administers the State Pension and a range of working age, disability and ill health benefits to around 20 million claimants and customers. Description:

As a Test Engineer you will be responsible for the testing of applications which make up citizen services. This includes defining the appropriate depth and breadth of testing using a risk based approach, and ensuring the stability, robustness and reliability of test suites. You will work with other teams within the Software Development Lifecycle to ensure that technical solutions are aligned.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and deliver comprehensive, robust and reliable automated test frameworks and automation suites to provide full coverage of business requirements.
  • Identify and drive resolution of defects or issues preventing delivery of Test Engineering activities.
  • Maintain full traceability of defects, tests and requirements.
  • Design, build and maintain an effective test infrastructure.
  • Create and maintain appropriate documentation within the test automation code base.
  • Knowledge of the latest technical test tools and where it would be beneficial to apply them.
  • Review the test suite and update the code base to reflect current best practices and reduce technical debt.
  • Develop and maintain reusable libraries and services.
  • Communicate with other teams and share technical resources, knowledge and lessons learned
  • Contribute to the production of  appropriate test approaches and reporting mechanisms to be agreed with senior stakeholders
  • Ensure that usability, accessibility, security, stability and capacity are embedded in the development of citizen services.
  • Collaborate with other teams in the Software Development Lifecycle to drive technical solutions.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary Agile Team understand Agile delivery principles, methodology and tools.
  • Design and build the technical setup and working methods for continuous integration, delivery and deployment practices.
  • Review test practices and implement improvements.


Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Able to identify simple patterns and trends. Investigates problems and opportunities in existing processes and contributes to recommending solutions to these. Works with stakeholders to identify objectives and potential benefits available.
  • Able to review requirements, specifications and defines test conditions. Able to identify issues and risks associated with work whilst being able to analyse and report test activities and results.
  • Able to design and execute non-functional test cases using standard testing techniques, in instructed environments. Able to come up with different business scenarios for a feature, working with others in the team.
  • Has had experience in applying Agile principles in practice. Able to provide a clear, open and transparent framework in which teams can deliver. Has an awareness of Agile tools and is starting to use them intelligently. Able to visualise and make visible the work of the team. Can adapt and reflect, is resilient and has the ability to see outside of the process.
  • Can select and support the most appropriate tool or method.
  • Understands core technical concepts related to their role and is able to apply them.
