On behalf of DWP, we are looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer for a 6 month contract (Inside IR35) based hybrid in Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Blackpool, Newcastle or Sheffield.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for welfare, pensions, and child maintenance policy. As the UK’s biggest public service department, it administers the State Pension and a range of working age, disability and ill health benefits to around 20 million claimants and customers. Working with DWP, you will be helping us to drive our priorities to:
- Help people to move into work and support those already in work to progress, with the aim of increasing overall workforce participation
- Help people to plan and save for later life, while providing a safety net for those who need it now
- Provide effective, efficient, and innovative services to the millions of claimants who rely on us every day, including the most vulnerable in society
- Improve experience of our services while maximising value for money for the taxpayer.
Core Purpose:
You will contribute to the Engineering and Architecture Leads that will help deliver the reduction of Tech Debt in our systems. With a focus on stability, availability and quality you will be accountable/responsible for the code you produce and administer.
The restructuring of teams has brought together multiple AWS and Azure environments that were:
- Created by different developers, each using their own patterns, naming conventions, and build approaches.
- Lacking formal governance, meaning limited unified standards, security baselines, or repeatable pipelines.
- Irregularly maintained, resulting in outdated dependencies, deprecated services, and inconsistent IaC (Infrastructure-as-Code) structure.
- Fragmented across teams, with bespoke scripts, one-off resource configurations, and duplicated logic.
- Built without lifecycle management, so pipelines, modules, and versioning practices vary widely, making maintenance and scaling harder.
As a Senior DevOps Engineer, your main responsibilities will be:
- Standardise the Pipelines - Create a unified pipeline framework that all CCS services follow.
- Modularise Common Code Reduce duplication and improve maintainability by consolidating shared logic.
- Adopt Dependency Automation (Renovate Bot, etc.) - Introduce automated dependency and version control.
- Design and manage the tactics for building reusable libraries, templates and services and own the development of medium-long term strategies for product lines within your Functional and Professional Communities
- To provide, technical leadership and guidance, supporting the creation of a DevOps culture and implementing automation best practices. This will include coaching, mentoring and supporting your team, taking responsibility for their decision making and their professional development.
- Responsible for large blocks of work, employees in varied disciplines and with a wide span of leadership, breaking down user stories into tasks.
- Work closely with senior officers, providing advice and suggesting courses of action, provide coaching, mentoring and support to Software and DevOps Engineer colleagues and peers
Essential:
- Experience in technologies & framework like important key criteria, this will be used by PSR GitLab, AWS Pipelines.
- Design and Implement AWS based infrastructure using Terraform
- Familiarity for working with Azure services like Virtual Machines, Storage Accounts, Function Apps
- Experience in AWS networking & storage, management & governance services.
