On behalf of Network Rail, we are looking for a Assistant Project Manager for a 6 month contract based remotely but does include up to 4 days a week in the Manchester Square One offices

New project – training team within Network Rail – helpdesk and planning for national training – Shared Services


As a Assistant Project Manager, your main responsibilities will be:


  • Support Change Delivery: Assist Project Managers and Change Leads in coordinating change initiatives that impact Shared Services operations (e.g. HR, Finance, Payroll, Procurement). 
  • Documentation & Tracking: Maintain accurate records of change activities, stakeholder engagement, feedback, and actions, ensuring updates are captured in change logs or trackers. 
  • Training Coordination: Organise logistics for training sessions or briefings to support adoption of new systems, processes, or tools, ensuring attendance is tracked and materials are distributed. 
  • Data Collection & Analysis: Gather data (e.g. from surveys, feedback forms, or system reports) to support root cause analysis and help assess service performance or user impact. 
  • Process Review Support: Contribute to small process mapping exercises or workshops, helping document current- state processes and capture suggested improvements. 
  • Proactive Suggestions: Identify and propose simple improvements to team workflows or reporting processes, especially where manual effort or duplication is identified. 


Essential Skills


  • Experience as an assistant project manager across either public or privste sectors
  • Experience in maintaining project documentation, action logs, risk and issue trackers, and project plans to the highest of standard
  • Identify and propose simple improvements to team workflows or reporting processes, especially where manual effort or duplication is identified. 
  • Excellent communication skills– able to engage confidently with stakeholders at all levels. 
  • Highly organised with the ability to manage time effectively and prioritise a large workload 
  • Strong self starter with a pro active confident approach to all duties


Desirable Skills


  • Experience within large public sector, rail, infrastructure, or shared service operation is highly beneficial
