On behalf of The Ministry of Justice, we are looking for a Finance Business Partner (Inside IR35) for a 12 month contract on a hybrid basis (2 days per week in London)
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) priorities include improving public safety and reducing reoffending by reforming prisons, probation and youth justice, and building a justice system which makes access to justice swifter and more certain for all citizens whatever their background. Project professionals in the MoJ help to improve the government’s ability to protect the public and reduce reoffending, and to provide a more effective, transparent and responsive criminal justice system for victims and the public.
The Role:
As a Finance Business Partner within the Ministry of Justice Digital Services team, you will provide high-quality financial support and strategic insight to senior leaders, enabling informed decision-making across a complex and evolving digital landscape. Working as part of the Finance Business Partner team, you will build trusted relationships with stakeholders, translating financial information into meaningful business intelligence and ensuring that investment decisions align with organisational priorities and deliver value for money.
This role will specifically support the Probation Digital function, which has seen a significant increase in funding linked to the Independent Sentencing Review. You will play a key role in helping the business effectively plan, manage and optimise this investment while acting as the critical link between finance and operational delivery.
As a Finance Business Partner your main responsibilities will be:
- Partner with senior stakeholders across Probation Digital to provide proactive financial advice, challenge and support.
- Support the effective management of budgets, forecasts and financial plans within a complex digital and technology environment.
- Translate financial data into clear, meaningful insights that support strategic and operational decision-making.
- Provide robust financial analysis and identify risks, opportunities and trends to inform business planning.
- Work collaboratively with business leaders to ensure funding is allocated and utilised effectively to deliver agreed outcomes.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders across Digital Services and wider corporate finance teams.
- Act as the key interface between finance and the business, helping colleagues understand financial implications and interdependencies.
- Support month-end and forecasting processes, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial information.
- Challenge assumptions constructively and provide balanced advice to support effective decision-making.
- Use evidence and data to influence stakeholders and support negotiations where required.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across finance and the wider business.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of financial processes, reporting and controls.
- Deliver high-quality outputs within agreed timescales in a fast-paced and changing environment.
Essential:
- Significant experience in a Finance Business Partnering role within a complex organisation.
- Demonstrable experience supporting senior stakeholders and building trusted relationships quickly.
- Strong ability to translate financial information into clear business insight and articulate the narrative behind the numbers.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to a range of audiences, including non-finance stakeholders.
- Proven ability to influence, challenge and support stakeholders appropriately, exercising sound judgement.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends and provide practical recommendations.
- Experience supporting budgeting, forecasting and financial planning processes.
- Ability to understand the strategic objectives of the business and align financial advice accordingly.
- Evidence of using facts and data to support negotiation, challenge and decision-making.
- A collaborative approach, promoting knowledge sharing and effective partnership working.
- A proactive, service-focused mindset with the ability to deliver at pace and manage competing priorities.
- High levels of emotional intelligence and the ability to work empathetically with a broad range of stakeholders.
Desirable:
- Fully qualified accountant (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
- Candidates with substantial Finance Business Partnering experience who are not professionally qualified will also be considered.
- Experience working within central government, the public sector or similarly complex environments.
- Experience supporting digital, technology or transformation programmes.
- Knowledge of government finance processes and controls.
- Experience supporting large, complex budgets and investment decisions.
- Understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with digital service delivery.
