On behalf of Geopolitics and Economic Security (DBT ESATR GAES), we are looking for a Copywriter (Inside IR35) for a 6 month contract on a hybrid basis London or DBT regional office (Belfast, Darlington, Nottingham, Manchester, Edinburgh) 2 days per week.
About the Role:
The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is seeking an experienced Copywriter to support the delivery of the new Economic Security Advisory Service (ESAS).
Economic security is central to the UK Government's growth agenda. ESAS provides businesses with a single source of advice, guidance and support to help them understand economic security risks, strengthen resilience and access government services.
This is an exciting opportunity for a talented copywriter to transform complex government policy, technical guidance and analytical information into clear, engaging and action-oriented content for UK businesses. Working alongside policy, digital, communications and design teams, you'll create high-quality written content across a variety of digital and print channels, ensuring businesses receive practical, accessible and impactful communications.
As a Copywriter, your main responsibilities will be:
- Research existing government and publicly available content relating to economic security and business resilience.
- Produce high-quality, business-focused copy for the Economic Security Advisory Service and related platforms, including Business Growth Service and business.gov.uk.
- Translate complex policy, technical guidance and analytical information into clear, concise and engaging communications for non-specialist audiences.
- Write content across a wide range of communications products, including:
- Website content
- Business guidance
- Campaign materials
- Publications
- Promotional content
- Stakeholder communications
- Email communications
- Product copy
- Develop consistent messaging, tone of voice and narrative across all ESAS communications.
- Collaborate with policy, analytical, communications, digital delivery and design teams to ensure content is accurate, relevant and aligned with programme objectives.
- Manage copywriting assignments from initial brief through research, drafting, stakeholder review and final delivery.
- Refine content in response to stakeholder feedback while maintaining quality and consistency.
- Advise colleagues on effective written communications for different audiences, channels and formats.
- Ensure all content meets accessibility standards and aligns with wider DBT, Business Growth Service and GOV.UK communication principles.
Essential:
- Proven experience working as a Copywriter, Communications Copywriter, Content Copywriter, Creative Copywriter or in a similar communications role.
- Excellent experience translating complex policy, technical or specialist information into clear, engaging and accessible copy for non-specialist audiences.
- Strong experience writing for digital channels with an understanding of user-focused content and audience engagement.
- Experience producing content across multiple communication formats, including web content, publications, campaigns, guidance, stakeholder communications and promotional materials.
- Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to develop compelling messaging, narratives and calls to action that support organisational objectives.
- Experience working collaboratively with policy experts, designers, digital teams and senior stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple copywriting projects from briefing through to delivery while meeting tight deadlines.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment.
Desirable:
- Experience working within UK Government, public sector communications or similarly complex stakeholder environments.
- Knowledge of business-facing communications, particularly content aimed at SMEs and business decision-makers.
- Experience supporting communications relating to economic security, trade, resilience, regulation, supply chains, risk or other complex policy areas.
- Experience writing for both digital and print communications.
- Experience contributing to integrated communications or marketing campaigns.
- Familiarity with GOV.UK, business.gov.uk or similar government digital standards and tone of voice.
- Experience using audience insight, analytics or stakeholder feedback to continuously improve communications.
