On behalf of Sport England, we are looking for a Risk Management Support Officer (Inside IR35) for a 6 month contract based remotely with occasional visits to the London office


The purpose of this role is to support the effective identification, assessment and management of risk to enable Sport England to achieve its strategic objectives. The role will support Sport England by working in partnership with senior management and colleagues across the organisation to mitigate the risks we are exposed to and

empower us to maximise the impact of the funds we spend on our activities.


The role will play a vital role in ensuring Sport England complies with its legal and

regulatory responsibilities, demonstrating effective management and accountability.  


As a Risk Management Support Officer, your main responsibilities will be


  • Accountable for the compliance of all Sport England risk management guidance requirements, ensuring that any areas of non-compliance are dealt with and associated risks are appropriately highlighted to the Executive leadership Team (ELT) and Board where appropriate.
  • Custodian of risk & audit tools and processes (risk registers, risk policy & framework, Internal Audit tracker etc).
  • Ensure that colleagues within the organisation have received suitable training on risk management.
  • Identify gaps in risk management practice; collaborating with leadership to ensure improvement activity is implemented.
  • Research and analyse external risk management practices, policy and regulatory requirements to benchmark and ensure Sport England practices are appropriate and compliant.
  • Act as the key point of contact for risk management, addressing Directorate
  • concerns or questions on risks.
  • Ensure risk management action plans are appropriate, reviewed and actioned on a regular basis.
  • Build strong working relationships at all levels across the organisation to support a value-adding risk culture.
  • Maintain the Corporate and aggregated risk registers, ensuring they are regularly updated to reflect new and emerging risks.
  • Engage with key projects and programmes to ensure that key risks are identified, assessed and mitigated.


Essential Skills


  • Knowledge of risk and policy framework principles, evidenced by working in a risk environment.
  • Experience of working in, or alongside, a risk management function.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to adapt communication style to different audiences.
  • Experience with stakeholders across a busy department and team
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A pro-active approach and demonstrable ability to suggest changes and
  • improvements to processes and systems.
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office suite.
  • Strong self starter


Desirable Skills


  • Previously developed and overseen value-adding risk management tools and processes.
  • Experience of working with and providing advice to senior management.
  • Experience of drafting, communicating and evaluating internal policies and procedures.
  • Experience of writing technical reports and producing relevant management information for Senior Management.
  • Knowledge of how publicly funded bodies operate.
  • Appropriate risk management certification such as Institute of Risk Management (IRM), APM Risk Management (APMRM)
