Description & Requirements

On behalf of Sport England, we are looking for an Interim Director DDaT (Inside IR35) for a 12 Month contract based REMOTELY, (travel to London office regularly).


The Interim Director of Digital, Data and Technology leads Sport England’s strategic approach to technology, ensuring that digital and IT services are secure, resilient, and aligned with our strategy, Uniting the Movement.

In addition to being responsible for driving forward an innovative organisational-wide digital, data and technology strategy, the post-holder will lead Sport England’s technical teams and be responsible for all aspects of our overall technical infrastructure.

During this transitional phase, the Director DDaT will transform how Sport England uses technology, data, and digital services by defining the methodology to integrate and consolidate digital and IT workstreams through internal business transformation and professional oversight of standards across Sport England. You will oversee digital and technology teams and lead the cultural change to establish Sport England as a digitally enabled organisation.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

 Leadership (Strategic)

  • Develop and Implement Technology Strategy: Lead the creation and execution of a digital transformation strategy and roadmap aligned with Sport England’s priorities, emphasising user-centred design.
  • Strategic Technology Planning: Determine the most appropriate technologies to achieve Sport England’s objectives. Assess the effect of changes on different parts of the organisation and its partners. Identify the underlying causes of technology challenges faced and make strategic recommendations to resolve them
  • Enhance Communication & Understanding: Oversee the development of a communication technology strategy that promotes understanding and support for new technologies within Sport England.
  • Lead the design and delivery of technology and data management architecture, ensuring scalability, security, and interoperability.
  • Oversight and Governance: Ensure the strategies, solutions and services proposed meet government technology, digital and data standards.


Leadership (People)

  • Lead Technical Teams: Ensure the effective and secure operational delivery of all Sport England’s technical teams and technical architecture.
  • Line Management: Direct the day-to-day line management and development of senior managers within the ICT team, ensuring high performance and fair workload distribution.
  • Foster Innovation and Collaboration: Provide guidance and support to technical teams to cultivate a culture of innovation and collaboration. Build service capability and coherence within the team, transitioning from a fragmented model.


Digital Transformation Leadership

  • Lead the strategic design, acquisition, management, and implementation of enterprise-wide technology and data management infrastructure, creating a strong foundation to deliver the business strategy and provide expert technical advice.
  • Data Management and Security: Lead on-premises, asset, and cloud enterprise data management activities to acquire, validate, and securely store SE data.
  • Technology Oversight: Oversee Sport England’s technology infrastructure, including hardware, software, and networks, ensuring its operational reliability and security.
  • Budget and Resource Management: Manage the technology budget and allocate resources effectively, aligning investments with business priorities.
  • Supplier Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with technology suppliers to ensure access to the best solutions and services.
  • Mitigate Risks: Identify and mitigate potential technology-related risks, including cybersecurity threats and data breaches.


You will have:

Essential

  • Significant experience in leading technology teams at a senior level (reporting to a Board or Executive team)
  • Experience in leading organisational transformation focused on technology and digital.
  • Knowledgeable about new and emerging technologies and a proven ability to recommend, source and implement IT and digital solutions to improve Internal infrastructures, ensuring pragmatic, cost-effective technology decisions are taken to ensure value for money.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of purchasing, implementing and managing IT infrastructure.
  • Proven evidence of leading a culture of knowledge sharing and strong evidence-based delivery.
  • Ability to collaborate internally and externally, working with and through others to achieve results and building trusting, respectful and lasting relationships
  • Proven ability to influence senior colleagues and non-executives and communicate complex issues, ensuring they can be understood


Desirable

  • Experience working in or with public sector bodies, either central or local government or Arm’s Length Bodies
  • Familiarity with Government Digital Service (GDS) standards and agile delivery methodologies
