Description & Requirements

On behalf of the Met Office, we are looking for a Build and Configuration Operations Engineer (Inside IR35) for a 6 Month hybrid contract with occasional visits to Exeter, (perhaps once a quarter) .


Note: SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be willing & eligible to undergo checks. Please note, due to the exceptional requirements of this position, (and speed at which we require a postholder in situ), preference may be given to candidates who meet all of the essential criteria and hold active security clearance


As a Build and Configuration Operations Engineer you will

  • Support, manage and maintain a single application or a suite of applications.
  • Dealing with more complex issues, is responsible for code deployment and coordinating change-based activities such as taking services live.
  • Depending on the complexity and size of a project and the likely impact it will have on the business, you might manage and maintain certain aspects of an application.


Typical Skills:

  • Maintain secure configuration and accurate information, controlling IT assets in one or more significant areas, and verifying location and state of assets.
  • Manage service components to ensure they meet business needs and performance targets.
  • Analyse and assess impact and develop and document change requests.
  • Identify process optimisation opportunities with guidance and contribute to the implementation of proposed solutions.
  • Diagnose and prioritise incidents, investigating their causes and finding resolutions. Initiate and monitor actions to investigate patterns and trends to resolve problems.
  • Determine the appropriate remedy and assist with implementation of it as well as preventative measures.
  • Take inputs and establish coherent frameworks that work. Use management system software and tools and have knowledge of logical schemata to investigate problems, collect performance statistics and create reports.
  • Understand core technical concepts related to the role and can apply them with guidance.
  • Review requirements, specifications and define test conditions. Identify issues and risks associated with work while being able to analyse and report test activities and results.


Essential Criteria, skills and experience

Configuration, programming and build. 

  • You can apply standards and methods to ensure system compliance.
  • You can provide technical advice to stakeholders and colleagues.
  • You can use agreed specifications to design, configure, code, test or document medium complexity software.
  • You have a working knowledge of Cloud technologies (e.g. AWS) and understand cyber security best practice.


Development process optimisation and system design. 

  • You can identify process optimisation opportunities (with guidance) and contribute to the implementation of proposed solutions.
  • You can use appropriate design standards, methods and tools, and ensure they are applied effectively.
  • You are able to embrace and utilise relevant new technologies, while identifying and bridging training deficits.


Systems integration and sustainability. 

  • You can advise on the definition of the integration build.
  • You can co-ordinate build activities across systems.
  • You understand how to undertake and support integration activities, ensuring that our operational forecast systems are reliable, robust and environmentally sound.


Service support. 

  • You can identify, triage and fix operational faults.
  • You are able to communicate progress to stakeholders/customers in a clear and concise manner.


Mentoring team members. 

  • You can provide targeted mentoring and coaching to other team members, facilitating knowledge transfer within the team.


Please be aware that this role can only be worked within the UK and not Overseas.
