On behalf of Companies House, we are looking for a Senior Management Accountant Inside IR35 for a contract until 31st March 2027 based Hybrid working (1/2 days per month in Cardiff office and remaining WFH)

This is an exciting opportunity to join a progressive and inclusive team within Strategic Finance at Companies House. You will play a key role in the financial management of the organisation.


Role purpose:

As Senior Management Accountant, you will oversee the month-end process ensuring the completeness and accuracy of the data and in the medium term set the strategic direction of reports overseeing the development of standardised reporting to ensure consistent messaging that will shape Financial Management conversations to focus on the key areas.


Each month you will produce a monthly executive summary of the financial position, including risks, opportunities and efficiencies, for presentation to Head of Financial Management.


Alongside this, you will be responsible for managing monthly processes as part of the Central Management Accounts function such as project recharges, payroll postings and income forecasting for the whole organisation ensuring that these activities are delivered to existing timelines. A close attention to detail will be necessary to ensure data accuracy and reliability at key deadlines.


This role will involve using Power BI and Alteryx which are our current reporting tools for collating and manipulating our finance data. No specific experience is required for Alteryx, however Power BI experience would be advantageous.


About the team 

The Financial Management team encompasses Management Accounts and Finance Business Partners teams. The Senior Management Accountant sits between the Management Accountants and a Senior Finance Business Partners working with both teams to play an important part in the running of monthly financial reporting processes.

The role offers a fantastic opportunity to get involved in a wide breadth of work including project costings, centralised processes and financial management reporting.


You will be working alongside a great team, which are established and embedded within the organisation, and have seen their work regularly recognised within national awards. Use of new technologies such as Alteryx and Power BI has seen the team shortlisted for public sector and national finance awards in recent years for advancement in automation, analytics and reporting, which has created time for the team to focus on adding value.


The main duties and responsibilities of the Senior Management Accountant would be to:

  • Oversee the timely and accurate preparation of management accounts, ensuring delivery both directly and through effective leadership of the team.
  • Guarantee completion of all monthly financial tasks and establish robust procedures to support operational excellence.
  • Review and analyse both financial and non-financial data to identify emerging trends, providing insightful recommendations to Senior Finance Business Partners and Head of Financial Management for informed decision making.
  • Create reports, including drafting, collating and review, for executive boards, steering groups and others as required by Head of Financial Management.
  • Lead initiatives to automate data processing and maintain business intelligence dashboards—primarily using Power BI and Alteryx—while acting as the primary technical resource within the team.
  • Liaise with business owners of key data sets such as for workforce planning and income forecasting to help build financial models with integrity and accuracy.
  • Supply dependable and precise data to support accruals and forecasting processes, thereby enhancing financial planning accuracy.
  • Administer internal budgets and manage delegation frameworks in accordance with organisational policies.
  • Drive continuous improvement activities aimed at increasing automation and precision within financial management team, contributing to greater efficiency and reliability across the team.


Essential:

  • Strong financial and accounting background, with significant experience preparing, reviewing and interpreting management accounts, and overseeing month end close processes to tight deadlines.
  • Proven ability to analyse and interpret complex financial and non financial data, identifying trends, risks and opportunities, and translating these into clear, actionable insights for senior stakeholders.
  • Experience of producing high quality financial reports and executive summaries, tailored for senior leadership, boards or steering groups to support effective decision making.
  • Demonstrable leadership and people skills, with experience coordinating or leading financial processes, influencing others and working collaboratively across finance teams and wider business areas.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail, with a strong track record of maintaining data integrity across payroll, recharges, forecasting, accruals and budget management activities.
  • Confidence using business intelligence and reporting tools, with experience of Power BI (or similar tools) to manipulate data, build dashboards and support standardised, consistent financial reporting.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement, with evidence of driving efficiencies, improving financial processes or introducing automation to enhance the quality, reliability and timeliness of financial management information
  • CIMA, ACCA or equivalent qualification
