About the Electoral Commission
The Electoral Commission is the UK’s independent body overseeing elections and regulating political finance. Everything we do is about ensuring trust, participation, and integrity in the democratic process.
As we enter a bold new chapter under our five-year Corporate Plan, we are increasing our workforce and transforming how we plan and deliver core services. This post plays a central role in that journey.
About the role
As Senior Adviser, Electoral Guidance, you will support the development, coordination and delivery of the Commission’s electoral guidance and resources and provide advice on electoral practice issues.
Working at the heart of the Commission’s guidance function, you will help ensure those responsible for delivering elections and electoral registration have access to accurate, consistent and accessible advice. You will respond to complex queries from across the electoral community, and help shape how guidance is delivered—particularly through digital channels.
On a day-to-day basis, you will:
- Produce high-quality UK-wide, nation and region-specific guidance, resources and supporting materials for electoral administrators, candidates and agents to support the effective delivery of electoral services
- Provide high-quality, timely advice in response to complex electoral practice queries
- Provide expert advice on electoral practice issues arising from legislative change, legal judgments and government initiatives
- Support the maintenance and improvement of online guidance and resources for electoral administrators, candidates and agents
- Contribute to projects reviewing and digitising the Commission’s approach to guidance delivery
This role offers a high level of responsibility and the opportunity to support colleagues and stakeholders across the UK’s electoral system.
About the team
You will join the Electoral Guidance team within the Electoral Administration and Regulation Directorate. The team is responsible for developing and maintaining accurate, accessible and fit for purpose guidance and resources, and for providing expert advice on electoral practice.
The team works collaboratively with colleagues across English regions, devolved offices, and Legal, Regulation Guidance and Communications teams. We value professionalism, curiosity and teamwork and we are committed to sharing expertise and delivering guidance that is practical, clear and trusted by those who rely on it.
Who we’re looking for
This role would suit someone with strong experience of UK electoral services who enjoys working with complex information and supporting others through clear, well-judged advice.
You will be successful in this role if you:
- Have experience delivering or supporting electoral services within the UK
- Are confident working with electoral legislation and advising on its practical application
- Have experience developing and delivering guidance, training or advisory services
- Can manage competing priorities while maintaining high standards of accuracy and quality
- Communicate complex information clearly to a range of audiences
- Build strong, professional relationships with stakeholders
Experience of working with online content management systems, digital guidance products or formal project management methodologies would be advantageous, but not essential.
Why work for us?
This role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on the quality and consistency of elections across the UK. You will develop specialist expertise in electoral practice, work on nationally significant issues, and contribute to the evolution of how guidance is delivered in a digital-first environment.
We offer a strong total reward package, including:
- Flexible working and hybrid model (40% office minimum)
- 28 rising to 30 days annual leave + bank holidays
- Civil Service pension scheme (28.97% employer contribution)
- Study support for professional qualifications
- Ongoing learning and development opportunities
- Ride2Work, eye care vouchers and more
