About the Role
Great British Energy is looking for a Senior Risk Manager – Operational to join our GBE Local Directorate Team. This role will play a key part in contributing to projects, objectives, and wider organisational goals.
Key Responsibilities
1. Risk Framework & Governance
- Lead and continually enhance GBE’s operational risk management framework, policies, and methodologies
- Oversee GBE’s operational risk governance processes, ensuring compliance with regulatory and internal standards
- Provide guidance to first‑line teams on risk policies, standards and governance expectations
- Ensure strong, evidence‑based oversight of operational risk across all business units
2. Risk Identification & Assessment
- Lead enterprise-wide risk identification exercises, including scenario analysis and emerging risk assessments
- Oversee business risk and control self‑assessments, ensuring consistency and challenge
3. Incident & Issue Management
- Develop and oversee an operational incident management framework, including root cause analysis and lessons learned
- Ensure timely escalation, tracking, and closure of operational risk issues
- Provide analysis on trends, themes, and systemic risks
- Contribute to resilience testing, business continuity planning, and supplier risk activities
4. Risk Reporting & MI
- Produce high‑quality operational risk reporting and tracking, suitable for Executive and Board level
- Ensure risk data quality, consistency, and transparency across the organisation
5. Stakeholder Engagement & Challenge
- Build strong relationships with first-line teams to embed a proactive risk culture
- Provide challenge, coaching and support to improve risk awareness and decision-making
- Collaborate cross-functionally on strategic or change initiatives
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
- Extensive experience in operational risk management within a regulated environment
- Strong understanding of operational risk frameworks, controls testing, incident management, and risk assessment
- Analytical capability with the ability to interpret data and distil insights
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management capabilities
- The ability to be a self-starter, and confidence to build processes and policies from the ground up
Desirable:
- Degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, or related field; professional qualifications (FRM, CFA) desirable
- Experience in energy, utilities, financial services, or another complex operational sector
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks applicable to the organisation
- Industry risk qualifications (e.g. IRM, CORM etc)
- Confident challenger with strong relationship‑building skills
- Proactive, detail‑focused, and comfortable working independently
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
