About the Role:

The Portfolio Officer will support the effective day-to-day operation of Great British Energy’s (“GBE’s”) portfolio management function, helping ensure that portfolio information gathering, reporting, governance and follow-up actions are timely and focussed, in line with GBE’s investment strategy and risk appetite.

The role will work alongside GBE’s investment, finance, risk, legal, strategy and delivery teams to support oversight of investments post-execution and the collective performance of the wider portfolio.

The postholder will contribute to portfolio monitoring, analysis, governance coordination and continuous improvement, helping GBE build a robust and scalable portfolio management capability as its investment activity grows.

This role will have a specific focus on GBE’s investments in energy projects, including project finance, joint venture, development, construction, operational and asset-backed investments across GBE’s energy deployment portfolio.

The postholder will support monitoring of GBE’s investments in energy projects from post-close through construction, operations, intervention and exit, ensuring that project performance is assessed against the approved investment case and GBE’s ongoing governance requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

• Support the monitoring of the performance of GBE’s individual investments and the wider portfolio against the investment case approved, conditions of GBE’s finance, agreed milestones, GBE’s objectives, the risks to the investment’s performance, and expected financial and strategic outcomes from the investments.
• Maintain portfolio records, trackers, action logs, reporting packs and governance documentation to support effective portfolio oversight and auditability.
• Collate, validate and analyse portfolio data, including financial, delivery, risk, governance and operational KPIs.
• Provide portfolio input to investment opportunities being considered, including portfolio risk implications, monitoring, and governance requirements.
• Prepare regular reporting, summaries and briefing materials for internal stakeholders, including GBE’s senior management, relevant investment and portfolio committees, GBE’s Board and shareholder representatives where required.
• Coordinate inputs from investment verticals, Finance, Legal, and Risk to ensure portfolio reporting is joined-up, consistent and decision-useful.
• Act as Board Observer in GBE investees, ensuring that there is effective reporting of relevant investee board-level information into GBE’s understanding of the risks in each investee and identifying emerging issues and risks to GBE’s investment.
• Help identify emerging issues, patterns and exceptions across the portfolio, including underperformance, delivery risks, concentration issues or cross-cutting dependencies, and escalate these appropriately.
• Support follow-up actions on investments that are off track, including enhanced monitoring, remedial actions and preparation of materials for escalation through GBE’s intervention channels where required. This includes support and, where required, leading portfolio actions including restructurings, follow-on investments, and exits.
• Contribute to improving portfolio tools, templates, controls and management information, helping to embed consistent ways of working across GBE’s investment portfolio.
• Assist in maintaining high-quality records and information flows to support a clear decision trail, knowledge transfer, lessons learned and continuous improvement across the portfolio management function.
• Build effective working relationships across GBE and support ad hoc analysis or deep dives on portfolio themes, pipeline prioritisation and performance issues as required.
• Develop and maintain a focused understanding of GBE’s energy project portfolio, including construction progress, operational performance, route-to-market assumptions, project risks, cash flows, valuation drivers and governance matters.
• Coordinate with relevant GBE investment verticals to identify emerging project issues, including cost overruns, delays, underperformance, grid, planning, route-to-market, offtake, counterparty or operational risks.
• Support reporting on energy project exposure, performance, emerging issues, interventions, valuations, exits and lessons learned for GBE’s Investment Committee, Executive Investment Forum and senior stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential:

• Experience in a portfolio management, programme, project, investment operations, governance, performance, finance or similar analytical/support role.
• Highly familiar with investment lifecycle processes, post-investment monitoring or risk tracking.
• Strong organisational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage multiple information flows accurately and to deadline.
• Good financial and commercial analytical skills and the ability to work with complex data and translate it into clear reporting and insight.
• Strong written communication skills, including experience preparing papers, summaries, reports or presentations for senior audiences.
• Good stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
• High attention to detail and a strong commitment to accuracy, record keeping and quality control.
• Ability to work effectively in a developing organisation, adapting as systems, processes and priorities evolve.
• Sound judgement, discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive or commercially relevant information.
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, particularly Excel, PowerPoint and Word
• Strong understanding of project finance, infrastructure projects, energy development, asset management or construction/operational investment monitoring, or the ability to apply investment monitoring disciplines to these areas quickly.

Desirable:

• Experience managing energy, infrastructure, project finance or asset-backed portfolios.
• Experience supporting committee or board reporting, governance forums or decision-making processes.
• Experience using portfolio reporting systems, dashboards or data visualisation tools.
• Experience working within public sector governance, assurance and accountability requirements.
• Experience in renewable energy, electricity infrastructure, project finance, development-stage assets, construction monitoring or operational asset management would be advantageous.
• Experience monitoring joint ventures, project SPVs, minority project investments or board/observer governance arrangements would be advantageous.
• Relevant degree or equivalent experience in finance, economics, business/finance, accountancy, mathematics, engineering, project delivery or a related field.
• A relevant professional qualification (for example: MBA, CB, CFA, CISI, ACA/CA) or evidence of working towards one would be highly advantageous.
