About the Role:
Great British Energy is an energy startup backed by the UK government. It is in the process of building its digital and technology capability, and the Chief Digital & Information Officer will lead that work. It is a foundational role to put in place the architecture, the operating model and the governance that GBE’s digital and IT function will rely on. The role reports to the Chief Corporate Officer, and the postholder is the Senior Responsible Owner for the Digital Investment Governance Committee, which is the CEO-chaired body that approves significant digital investment. The budget, the permanent headcount and the interim delivery support are already in place, so the right candidate starts with a real mandate and the means to build GBE’s Digital First organisation.
Great British Energy is looking for a Chief Digital & Information Officer to join our GBE Team. This role will play a key part in contributing to projects, objectives, and wider organisational goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and evolve GBE’s Digital First strategy, ensuring digital, data and AI remain at the centre of organisational growth and decision-making.
- Develop and implement a data strategy that enables GBE to become a genuinely data-driven organisation.
- Define and oversee the responsible, transparent and ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across the business.
- Establish a sustainable digital operating model where digital, data and AI are embedded into business-as-usual activities.
- Define GBE’s technology architecture, standards and platforms to support long-term business objectives.
- Lead the delivery and ongoing management of core technology systems, including ERP, CRM, cloud platforms, data and AI infrastructure.
- Oversee the development and operation of digital products and services that deliver measurable business outcomes.
- Own the organisation's technology sourcing strategy and manage strategic supplier and partner relationships.
- Act as the Senior Responsible Owner (SRO) for the Digital Investment Governance Committee.
- Drive investment governance, including portfolio prioritisation, risk management, assurance activities and benefits realisation.
- Exercise delegated investment authority within agreed governance and financial frameworks.
- Partner with the Chief Information Security Officer to ensure robust cyber security, data protection and UK GDPR compliance.
- Ensure AI solutions are implemented in a responsible, compliant and ethical manner.
Qualifications and Experience:
Essential:
- Senior leadership of a digital, data or technology function, with a record of building new organisations.
- Real experience of delivering a data-driven, AI-enabled and customer-focused agenda, and turning strategy into working platforms and measurable results.
- Experience leading large technology programmes that involve several delivery partners and complex sourcing arrangements.
- A strong grasp of investment governance, value for money and benefits realisation.
- Accountability for cyber security, data protection and the responsible use of AI in a regulated or high-assurance setting.
- The credibility to operate at executive and board level and with senior external stakeholders.
Desirable:
- Experience in energy, utilities or critical national infrastructure.
- Experience setting up an in-house capability and moving away from outsourced or transitional delivery.
Personal Qualities:
- Takes ownership, shows confidence in decision-making, and is willing to challenge constructively
- Focuses on delivering meaningful outcomes and making a positive, lasting impact
- Works collaboratively, valuing different perspectives and building inclusive relationships
- Proactive and adaptable, with a curiosity to explore new ideas and improve ways of working
- Resilient and resourceful in a fast-paced environment
What We Offer:
- Competitive base salary
- Performance-related bonus scheme
- Excellent pension scheme
- 4x salary life assurance
- Group income protection
- 38 days annual leave
- Flexible working arrangements
- Ongoing professional development and training
