Lead the Safe Performance of Britain’s Railway – Join Network Rail as a Signalling Team Leader

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING


You will lead a team responsible for inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal activities on signalling assets. The role combines technical competence with strong leadership to ensure all work is delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with Network Rail standards.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Directing and organising day‑to‑day team activities to ensure safe and efficient delivery of work
  • Establishing and maintaining appropriate safety arrangements and safe systems of work
  • Leading by example and promoting a strong safety culture
  • Proactively managing work quality, asset compliance, and team competence
  • Ensuring all vehicles, tools, plant, equipment, and materials are safe and fit for purpose
  • Producing operational and compliance reports to support performance and assurance
  • Working hands‑on with the team when required


This is a safety‑critical role and includes days, nights, weekends, and on‑call working. The post is subject to medical assessment and drug and alcohol testing.



TEAM LEADER RESPONSIBILITIES


The Team Leader role builds upon technical signalling experience and introduces full leadership responsibility. You will support, organise, and motivate your team to ensure work is carried out:

  • Safely
  • Efficiently
  • In line with relevant standards, procedures, and controls


You will take ownership of:

  • Safety leadership and compliance
  • Quality assurance of completed work
  • Managing and developing team competence
  • Ensuring assets meet maintenance and performance standards



EQUIPMENT AND ASSET RESPONSIBILITIES


You will oversee work on a range of signalling and associated assets, including:

  • Signalling control systems
  • Mechanical and electrical signalling equipment
  • Track circuits and point machines
  • Safety‑critical signalling infrastructure
  • Supporting tools, vehicles, and operational equipment



KEY QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE


Essential requirements:

  • Experience of organising and controlling the safe and efficient delivery of work
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of signalling inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques
  • Working knowledge of relevant standards, procedures, and instructions, including NR/L3/SIG/10663 and NR/L3/SIG/11231
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and influence a team
  • Demonstrated commitment to safe working behaviours


Desirable:

  • Experience in railway signalling, ideally in a Team Leader role
  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Ability and willingness to drive vehicles as required by business need



WORKING ARRANGEMENTS AND REQUIREMENTS


  • Safety‑critical role involving nights, weekends, and on‑call working
  • Subject to medical assessment and drug and alcohol testing
  • Compliance with location and business response time requirements



SALARY AND RECRUITMENT PROCESS


Salary: IMC25 – £54,698
