Description & Requirements


On behalf of the MOD, we are looking for a X2 Policy Officers (Inside IR35) for a contract to run up until 31/3/2027 hybrid based from Whitehall, London.


The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is a central government department with a mission to protect our country and provide the ultimate guarantee of its security and independence, as well as helping to protect its values and interests abroad.

The work really matters; the MOD offers a range of engaging roles which have a direct impact on the quality of services they provide, in many locations across the UK. We support teams working in HR, Primary Health Care, Corporate Services, and many others.


SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be willing & eligible to undergo checks. Please note, due to the exceptional requirements of this position (short-term nature of this role and speed at which we require a postholder in situ) preference may be given to candidates who meet all of the essential criteria and hold active security clearance.


As a Policy Officer, your main responsibilities will be:


  • Delivering rapid policy advice on complex Afghan Relocation issues, including post–February 2022 data incident cases
  • Building strong relationships across MOD and Whitehall to drive DARR/MOD policy objectives and influence cross‑government decisions
  • Producing high‑quality policy outputs, including ministerial submissions, briefings and communications
  • Owning and managing a varied policy portfolio, briefing senior stakeholders confidently in writing and verbally
  • Providing clear legal policy advice on ARAP cases, processes and emerging risks
  • Supporting the development and operation of ARAP policy, ensuring consistency, clarity and correct application across government
  • Analysing complex inputs to deliver concise ministerial, legal and senior-level advice
  • Engaging senior DARR leadership, including Deputy Directors, to enable informed decision‑making
  • Maintaining strong information and records management practices
  • Preparing urgent briefings on high‑profile and sensitive ARAP cases
  • Leading on dismissals litigation and coordinating activity across DARR teams
  • Liaising with FCDO, Home Office and wider HMG partners on ARAP and resettlement legal issues
  • Deputising for the G7 Assistant Head as required


Essential:


  • Sole UK National
  • Previous experience of working in a policy role within central Government (MOD/HO/FCDO nice to have) in particular developing policy solutions to novel, sensitive issues
  • Previous experience of writing policy papers/submissions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience of communicating credibly at senior levels, including providing high‑quality policy advice to Ministers both in writing and orally.
  • Proven ability to quickly build constructive relationships with colleagues across a department and with partners across Whitehall, in order to further MOD objectives and influence cross‑HMG decision‑making.
