Description & Requirements

On behalf of The Government Legal Department (GLD) we are looking for a Paralegal (Inside IR35) for a 12 month contract based In London, Leeds or Manchester with office attendance 3 times per week.


The Government Legal Department (GLD) is seeking an organised, motivated and detail focused Paralegal / Legal Support Officer to join its team.

This role offers the opportunity to support high profile legal work across government, providing essential research, drafting and casework support to lawyers advising on legislation, disputes, commercial matters and major cross government programmes.

You will work in a fast paced environment, support senior legal teams, and contribute to meaningful public sector work with real national impact.


As a Paralegal, your main responsibilities will be:


  • Provide responsive, professional support to lawyers and clients, helping maintain GLD’s high standards.
  • Build strong working relationships with lawyers, policy teams and cross government stakeholders.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare clear notes, summaries and first draft advice.
  • Assist with the delivery of legislation, procurements, agreements and dispute resolution work.
  • Support case management including disclosure, preparing evidence, handling correspondence and attending court or tribunal hearings as required.
  • Coordinate large legal projects, track progress and manage documentation across departments.
  • Collate legal updates, maintain knowledge management materials and ensure information is stored accurately.
  • Draft and proof documents including advice, correspondence, contracts, secondary legislation and briefing notes.
  • Prepare bundles, instructions to Counsel and associated case documentation under supervision.


Essential:


  • Some legal education and/or experience working in a legal, regulatory, or advisory environment.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret information and produce clear written outputs.
  • Excellent attention to detail and high quality drafting skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and work effectively under pressure.
  • Strong communication skills with the confidence to engage with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Highly organised, self motivated and able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Google Docs


Desirable:

  • Experience using legal research tools such as LexisNexis, Westlaw, or similar databases.
  • Experience in public sector, litigation, commercial or regulatory work
