Description & Requirements

On behalf of The Electoral Commission, we are looking for a Legal Research Assistant for a 6 month contract. This is a hybrid working role (two days per week office based - London).


Job Purpose:


To work as part of the Legal Team to support the delivery of the Commission’s Electoral Law: Consolidation & Rationalisation’ project, the Commission's other Corporate Plan Projects, and the broad range of current, and upcoming, legal / policy research topics. The role will involve a mix of legal and policy research, policy analysis, and general administrative work.


The post holder will work closely with members of the Commission’s Legal and Policy Teams, as well as staff from across the Commission’s wider functions to assess the practical impact of the current law and to contribute to developing options for reform. The role will also involve assisting in preparing and presenting the outcomes of analysis in the form of briefings and options papers, up to Board level.


Although situated within the Commission’s legal team, the role is primarily a research role. It is therefore not necessary for the post holder to be a qualified lawyer, but rather to be able to demonstrate research and analytical skills. The post holder will, however, be expected to respond flexibly to varying demands, including providing research and other support to contribute to the delivery of the Commission’s wider in-house legal service, as required.


As a Research Legal Assistant, your main responsibilities will be:


  • To support the planning, coordination, collection, and analysis of internal and external evidence / information, and undertaking legal / policy research, to inform the development of options to progress the Commission’s Corporate Plan projects.
  • Drafting and presenting internal briefings, updates, and other papers for senior decision makers.
  • To lead on organising a roundtable event for electoral law specialists. To include event administration, preparing briefing materials, and a note of the event.
  • To contribute to the delivery of the Commission’s wider in-house legal service by providing research and other support to lawyers, senior lawyers, and the Head of Legal, as necessary.


Essential:


  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Experience of undertaking research
  • Experience of undertaking legal or policy research
  • Ability to work flexibly, multi-task, and prioritise own workload through effective time management and planning techniques
  • An interest in law reform, elections, democracy, and / or the work of the Electoral Commission
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong IT skills including MS Office, Word and Excel
