Description & Requirements

On behalf of The Insolvency Service we are looking for a Senior Test Engineer (Inside IR35) for a 3 month contract (until 31/03/26) contract. Hybrid working with 2 days per week required in London or Birmingham.

The Senior Test Engineer will be a pivotal member of our agile delivery teams, working across multiple projects within a major re-platforming programme that’s improving several public-facing services. This includes building out a canonical data model and a set of reusable components to underpin our services. You will lead the testing strategy and approach, introduce or enhance automated testing frameworks, and ensure that our services meet the high standards expected under the GOV.UK Service Standard.

As a Senior Test Engineer your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Define and own the test strategy and quality assurance approach across multiple digital services.
  • Champion test automation, continuous integration, and continuous delivery (CI/CD) within agile teams.
  • Embed a quality-first culture — ensuring testing is integral to delivery, not an afterthought.
  • Mentor and support test engineers, sharing best practice and building testing capability across the team.
  • Contribute to service assessments and ensure all testing practices align with the GDS Service Standard and Technology Code of Practice.
  • Collaborate with service designers, developers, and product managers to ensure testing supports holistic, end-to-end service assurance.
  • Ensure testing practices support and validate the canonical data model and reusable service components, underpinning data consistency and system integrity across services.

Essential:

  • Self-starter with experience defining QA strategy and overseeing quality across multiple scrum teams.
  • Strong understanding of GDS service standards, accessibility requirements, and non-functional testing.
  • Proven delivery record establishing automated testing frameworks and embedding QA in CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experienced in using Jira to manage test plans, defect cycles, releases, and cross-team quality reporting.
  • Able to lead test planning, risk-based testing, and coordinate test resources in a high-pace environment.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked within the UK and not Overseas.
