On behalf of ONS, we are looking for a Senior Research Advisor INSIDE IR35 for a contract ending 31st of March based Remote with occasional travel to Newport.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the UK’s largest producer of official statistics, covering a range of key economic, social and demographic topics. These include measuring changes in the value of the UK economy, estimating the size, geographic distribution and characteristics of the population, and providing indicators of price inflation, employment, earnings, crime and migration.
The natural capital accounts is an annual publication which value of natural resources to people in the UK. To align with the new System on Natural Accounts, ONS plan to develop estimates of depletion for renewable and non-renewable resources, to be productionised in the next 3 to 4 years. To this aim, we will need to develop estimates of the stock of these resources and, particularly for renewable ones, of the rate of their regeneration, as well as their consumption. Timber will be one of the renewable resources we seek to develop estimates for.
SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be willing & eligible to undergo checks. Please note, due to the exceptional requirements of this position (short-term nature of this role and speed at which we require a postholder in situ) preference may be given to candidates who meet all of the essential criteria and hold active security clearance.
As a Senior Research Advisor your main responsibilities will be to:
- Scope out what sources of data exist to estimate the physical stock of timber at any given time in the UK, and if there are none, what methodologies exist to estimate this stock, what input data would be needed and which organisations we need to work with
- establishing data sources for the initial stock at a certain time and the rate of harvesting and regeneration for a given time
- Scoping data sources for developing estimates of depletion for fish
- reviewing data availability and engage with potential data providers
- manage stakeholder relationships, reach out to data providers, find out the limits of their publications and what scope there would be to commission new work from them
Essential:
- Quantitative background
- Experience of forestry or woodland conservation
- Background in environmental/natural sciences
- Public sector experience
Desirable:
- Python coding
