Description & Requirements

On behalf of DSIT, we are looking for a Economist - (Inside IR35) for a 4-month contract based remotely and with possible occasional office attendance


The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) brings together the relevant parts of the former Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the former Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

As a Economist - (Inside IR35), your main responsibilities will be:


  • Leading economic analysis to understand the impacts of policy interventions on the cyber security of technology.
  • Leading market analyses to better understand the markets affected by policy decisions.
  • Leading analysis and research to evaluate cyber security risks to technology, and the costs, benefits, and impacts of policy proposals ensuring evidence-based decision-making.
  • Responsibility for delivery of monitoring and evaluation, and post implementation review, of the cyber security elements of the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Act 2024.
  • Supporting Call for Views through analysis and analytical assurance
  • Supporting commissioned research on the cyber security risks to emerging technology including Space Tech, Quantum Computing, AI, to better understand the rationale for intervention in the cyber security of technology.
  • Line management of fast stream analyst.
  • Collaboration with policy teams, technical experts, and external stakeholders, including private sector partners and research providers to support effective, market-informed interventions.
  • Preparation of briefings, reports, and presentations to communicate analytical insights to senior policy makers.


  • This role also assists CSDI’s ‘Ecosystem’ policy teams which support the improvement of cyber security skills in the economy and support the growth and innovation of cyber security companies.
  • Leading development of business cases in this area.
  • Supporting value for money assessments of commissioned evaluations.
  • Finally, the role is responsible for analysis to support CSDI’s Strategy and International team. Primarily, this involves coordinating analytical requirements for cross-cutting projects such as the spending review across the directorate.


Essential:

  • Research knowledge
  • Degree in Economics
  • Public Sector experience
  • Experience of economic analysis to underpin legislation
  • Experience of commissioned research projects
  • Experience of using Excel to advanced level
