Description & Requirements

On behalf of Network Rail, we are looking for an Agentic Automation Engineer for a 6-12 month contract based 3 days per week in the London, Waterloo Office.

Network Rail is at the heart of revitalising Britain’s railway. From Crossrail – Europe’s largest civil engineering project – to investment in world-class stations and major programmes of electrification, we are involved in some of the most ambitious and diverse ventures that this country has ever seen. We at Network Rail are dedicated to becoming one of Britain's best employers and believe this starts with placing the candidate at the heart of everything we do!

Job Purpose

The purpose of the Agentic Automation Engineer role at GBRX is to design, configure, build, test and deploy secure, scalable, maintainable and reconfigurable automation solutions within a governed environment to enhance enterprise processes, support decision-making and increase operational efficiency across the rail industry. The role combines deep process understanding with solution orchestration expertise to develop secure, scalable and governed agentic AI capabilities using low-code, pro-code and cloud-native technologies. Working within a cross-functional delivery pod, the postholder will contribute to industry automation capability development through the design and development of technically robust and operationally sustainable agentic automation solutions capable of being reused and scaled across the rail industry.

As Agentic Automation Engineer, your main responsibilities will be:

  1. Design, develop, test and deploy safe and secure AI agents capable of reasoning, planning, coordinating activities and interacting with business systems to automate increasingly complex operational and knowledge-based activities safely and effectively
  2. Integrate Agentic AI solutions with enterprise platforms, software applications and operational systems by developing secure APIs, connectors and reusable integration services using low-code technologies
  3. Configure, extend and maintain low-code platforms and data pipelines to enable the automation of business processes and workflows across the rail industry
  4. Create and continuously improve reusable capability products by documenting engineering patterns, reusable components, reference implementations, standards and technical guidance, to strengthen industry professional capability and enable faster, more consistent delivery
  5. Provide technical delivery assurance by assessing technical complexity, estimating engineering effort, conducting solution testing and resolving technical issues throughout the delivery lifecycle
  6. Support the deployment of solutions that meet operational needs and deliver measurable value by translating business requirements and process definition documents to inform user-centred design of automation solutions
  7. Optimise agentic automation solutions to maintain accuracy, scalability and resilience by peer reviewing solutions, maintaining solution quality and continuously improving delivery approach and outcomes
  8. Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary Delivery Pods and contribute technical expertise alongside Pod members to deliver integrated solutions that improve operational performance
  9. Operate within governance frameworks by applying security controls for intelligent and agentic automation solutions and maintaining adherence to organisational standards and industry best practices
  10. Support strategic initiatives and foster innovation across the industry by developing and maintaining processes for continuous integration, automated testing, and version control of automation solutions in production environments.

Essential:

  1. Proven experience developing enterprise automation solutions within the Microsoft low-code and pro-code ecosystem (Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry, Azure OpenAI Service, Azure AI Search, Azure Logic Apps, Azure Functions, Azure API Management, Azure DevOps, Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft Graph, Microsoft Entra ID, Semantic Kernel, Dataverse, GitHub, etc.)
  2. Experience with one or more other agentic orchestration platforms (e.g. AWS Bedrock Agents, Google Cloud Vertex, IBM watsonx Orchestrate, UiPath Agent Builder)
  3. Experience developing operational copilots and integrating enterprise systems and APIs, designing and implementing REST APIs, GraphQL APIs, event-driven architectures, webhooks, message queues and integration middleware
  4. Experience with Git, CI/CD, automated testing, secure software development, source control, containerisation (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud-native development
  5. Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, .NET, C#, JavaScript / TypeScript, Java or SQL
  6. Comprehensive solution requirement capture, process design, solution design and solution definition documentation experience
  7. Experience with cloud platforms and their components (e.g. Azure, AWS, GCP,) for deploying and managing solutions
  8. Excellent problem-solving abilities, innovative thinking and a collaborative mindset

Desirable:

  1. Familiarity with the railway sector and its operational challenges is a plus
  2. A degree (or equivalent qualification) in a STEM discipline or a closely related field
  3. Experience with Power Platform and one or more of UiPath, Blue Prism, Automation Anywhere, Camunda or Pega is an added advantage
  4. Experience developing both low-code and pro-code Agentic AI solutions is highly desirable
